The company has
been funded to date by its directors and a number of private
investors. In addition, grants have been received from the
Welsh Assembly Government's SMARTCymru programme and from
a local Powys fund -
Glasu.
The
business has aroused international interest – mainly as a result
of awareness marketing – because of the daffodil being the
iconic Welsh national flower, the parlous state of Welsh upland
farming and the spectacular local scenery. Alzeim has been
featured on various television channels, and numerous press
articles have been published. Publicity has also been generated
by supportive pressure groups wanting more action to curb the
ravages of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Alzeim’s product strategy is divided into four phases. The first
is the production of natural Galanthamine from its specially
grown daffodil crops; the second is the production of a range of
Galanthamine-based products – some with unusual drug-delivery
systems - for the generic prescription market due to open up in
2009; the third will be to develop Galanthamine-based, safe
products for the health market sector and the fourth will
feature other alkaloids and possibly other medical conditions.
The
first phase involves the complete agronomic processing regime -
using tonnes of specific varieties of daffodils including their
planting, fertilizing, growth control, harvesting and ultimate
extraction.
The business is based at Black Mountains Business Park at
Talgarth in Southern Powys. The facility, which is undergoing
fit-out for extraction machinery, will serve its purpose as a
research and administrative base for the near future until a
dedicated factory can be built.
